Twenty years ago, Martha Wainwright began her journey as a recording artist with the release of her debut album. That album not only launched a career spanning more than two decades but also became a defining chapter in Martha’s artistic life. Its creation was the culmination of a decade of relentless dedication: playing in bars, crafting cassettes and EPs to sell at shows, singing backup for their brother Rufus, falling in and out of love, practicing tirelessly, writing, and singing until exhaustion. Along the way, she partied, walked for hours in contemplation, shared tears and laughter with friends, collaborated with fellow musicians, and found inspiration in the great artists of the time. After two years of intense work in the studio with her ex-husband, the album finally came to life.
When labels initially refused to sign her, Martha Wainwright forged her own path with the help of many supporters, ultimately creating an album that was licensed and released in 2005. That record told her story, allowing her to tour, build a career in music, and fulfill a long-held dream she once doubted would come true.
Now, with six additional albums, two children, and a career still thriving, Martha Wainwright looks back proudly at the debut album that paved the way. Many of those early songs remain staples in their performances to this day.
In celebration of this milestone, the album will be released on vinyl for the first time on March 21, 2025 (pre-orders starting soon). The re-release will also feature previously unheard songs, outtakes, and material from the formative years leading up to the debut’s creation. To mark the occasion, Martha Wainwright will embark on a tour, performing the album in its entirety alongside a few new songs. “There’s no 48-year-old me without the 28-year-old me,” they reflect—a testament to the enduring impact of her earliest work.
